CGI action romp Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow has rocketed to the number one spot in the US and Canadian box office taking $16.2 million in its opening weekend.
Staring Jude Law, Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow Sky Captain sees a computer-generated 1930s New York under attack from giant killer robots.
Mr 3000 took $9.2 million and second place in the listings in front of last week's gore-drenched pole-positioner Resident Evil, which took $9 million.
Endearing romantic Brit flick Wimbledon, starring Kirsten Dunst and Paul Bettany, came a slightly disappointing fourth with $7.8 million.
Wimbledon had its UK premiere last night and will go on general release at the end of the week.
Kim Bassinger's claustrophobic thriller, Cellular, was left bringing up the rear. The movie, which also stars newcomer Chris Evans, sees a woman relying on a stranger at the other end of the phone after she is kidnapped.
US and Canadian box office top five:
1. Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow
2. Mr 3000
3. Resident Evil: Apocalypse
4. Wimbledon
