The American Film Institute (AFI) has compiled a list of the best movie quotes of all time.

A US television network is planning a special three-hour show to count down the top 100, which has been voted on by a panel of experts.

The top 100 has been put together as part of the AFI's celebration of 100 years of American cinema.

"Great movie quotes become part of our cultural vocabulary," said AFI's Jean Picker Firstenberg. "When you consider that any phrase from American film is eligible, you realise this is our most subjective topic to date.

"We expect nothing less than a war of words as we reignite interest in classic American movies."

100 Movie Quotes: America's Greatest Quips, Comebacks and Catchphrases will feature classics like "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" (Gone With The Wind), "May the Force be with you" (Star Wars), "Houston, we have a problem" (Apollo 13) and "Show me the money!" (Jerry Maguire).
