Supermarket store Sainsbury’s has reported an increase of 3.6per cent for like-for-like sales for the period of 10 weeks prior to Saturday, 16thMarch. The good news comes for the group at a time when several supermarket chains have been in the media spotlight.
Whether it’s because of the horsemeat scandal, or potential plans to take business viral, the UK’s supermarkets have been at the centre of many newspaper reports so far this 2013.
Now Sainsbury’s, one of the country’s top four supermarkets, reports their good news, which comes following on from certain High Street firms enduring a loss of sales and administration in the last six months.
The group has enjoyed an approximate 20per cent increase when it comes to food being sold online compared to 2012. Supermarket group Morrisons has previously explained they may look to groceries being sold online in the future.
As well as this, Sainsbury’s reportedly made around £1billion from selling items other than food.
With regards to this, the firm has witnessed an increase in clothes sales by up to 20per cent over the last 12 months.
Sainsbury’s Chief Executive Justin King told The Telegraph: “Our values are a long-term, strategic point of difference.
“The issues experienced by the industry over the last quarter underscore the importance of our detailed understanding of our supply chain."
The group has not been involved in the recent horsemeat scandal in any way since it first began – when traces of horse DNA were found in frozen beefburgers in January this year.
