The BBC wants Robbie Williams to play Robin Hood and lead their fight against ITV in the Saturday night ratings war.

The Beeb is planning to revamp the tales of the legendary outlaw, with bosses hoping it will be as successful as the new 'Dr Who', which helped the BBC thrash ITV on Saturdays.

Controller of BBC1 said: "We are developing and hope to do a 'Robin Hood'. It's another iconic family drama."

And BBC drama boss Jane Tranter added: "Like 'Dr Who', we would try and reinvent it. Robbie Williams would be great - we have asked him for a few projects and he has the kind of swagger we are looking for. We may have to ditch the tights though."
