There were many games slated for the 22nd World Cup Qualifier match in March, but with an odd twist of events the sporting schedule was shifted around and some of the results won’t be in for a while.
• One of the games, Northern Ireland versus Russia was called off completely due to severe weather and a rematch has not been successfully scheduled at this time.
The rematch may come as late as August, but would not be ideal since that is the normal time when the Northern Ireland team has a holiday, and Russia has already promised a friendly match against another team in August.
• Other 22nd World Cup Qualifier games were San Marino versus England. England came away with a clear victory, boasting 8 goals to San Marino’s zero.
Fans of the England team will no doubt be happy with the victory, but with an 8 goal game one could argue that the teams were not suitably matched upon skill level and it will be interesting to see how the 26th March game with Montenegro fares.
Even some fans may feel that the match made a win too easy and didn’t present enough of a challenge.
• Scotland versus Wales on 22 March resulted in a win for Wales with two points to Scotland’s one point. Wales displayed a great deal of tenacity to go from the underdog in the game to winning. Scotland was initially in the lead until Wales made a comeback with two goals to win.
• One of the other matches for the 22nd World Cup Qualifier was Sweden versus the Republic of Ireland. The teams were fairly equal in terms of the number of wins for their respective past 6 games. They ended up with a draw; no goals were scored on either side.
