The Queen is turning 90 years old on April 21 and is set to celebrate the occasion by giving away hundreds of free cupcakes at her Balmoral Estate. She will also be throwing open the gates of the 50,000 acre Royal Deeside estate to the public for one night only on Sunday May 15.
Spectators will also be able to watch the final of the QE90 event staged at Windsor Castle beamed live onto a giant screen in front of the castle. Participating in the event are more than 900 horses, musicians, actors and artists.
Her Majesty is expected to spend a week in Edinburgh as part of the official opening of the Scottish Parliament after the 5 May elections.
A spokesman said: “She will be doing Holyrood week, obviously, and opening the Scottish Parliament, but that will be the main focus in Scotland.
“Obviously there will be patron’s lunches and events around the official birthday in June, all being well. But those are being driven by communities.”
On the day of her 90th birthday, the Queen will light the first beacon in a chain, which will reach the four highest peaks in the United Kingdom, including Ben Nevis.
