Paul Simon and wife Edie Brickell were involved in what police described as an 'aggressive family dispute' that led to them being charged with disorderly conduct in Connecticut.
Officers responded when someone from inside their New Canaan home dialled 911. The police believed that it was a case of domestic violence, but due to the nature of minor injuries the singers were sent misdemeanour summons.
Police chief Leon Krolikowski said: “There was aggressiveness on both sides.”
On Monday, the couple showed united front when they appeared in court. Holding the hand of his wife, Simon and Garfunkel star Paul Simon told the judge that it was a rare argument that led to their arrest. Both of them said that they did not feel threatened by the other and that they saw no need for a protective order.
Speaking in court Simon said: "Both of us are fine together. We had an argument and it's fairly typical of us; neither of us has any fear or any reason to feel threatened and I don't feel I need to be protected."
Of the You Can Call Me Al and Mrs Robinson musician, Ms Brickell added: "He's no threat to me at all."
