Hi-de-Hi! actor Paul Shane has died aged 72, it has emerged. The star’s agent confirmed the sad news of his death, saying that he passed away after a short illness.
Reportedly, Paul’s loved ones were with him in a hospice in Rotherham, Yorkshire.
The actor, who played Ted Bovis in the BBC sitcom Hi-de-Hi!, has been remembered fondly by many over the years for his role in the holiday-camp show. This came to viewers’ screens in the 1980s.
His agent said: “Paul Shane was a consummate professional, a true gentleman, a good friend, and a joy to work with.”
Adding: “He didn't suffer fools, always maintained his sense of humour, never stinted on the time he gave to his fans.”
Comic Ricky Gervais in particular has visited the social network Twitter and paid tribute to Paul.
During his career Paul starred in other TV shows aside from Hi-de-Hi! such as You Rang M'Lord and Oh, Dr Beeching!.
He was the character Alf Stokes in You Rang M'Lord which was aired on television in the early 90s. Paul played Jack Skinner in the latter TV show following this.
He has also had parts in Holby City and Emmerdale, among other television programmes.
Paul’s early life saw him working in the coal mines, as well as him touring Britain as part of cabaret performances in the 1960s and 1970s.
He leaves behind three daughters and six grandchildren.
