Sir Paul McCartney has labeled Team GB football bosses as ‘idiots’ for not including David Beckham in the country’s Olympic team. 

 

The former Beatles star, 70, will perform at the opening ceremony of the games. He recently spoke up with a last-minute call for Beckham, who was snubbed by Team GB boss Stuart Pearce. 

 

McCartney said: “He’s a national hero. I would’ve thought Beckham would be first choice because of his huge contribution to getting the Olympics.”

 

“It would’ve been great for him to lead out our British football team.”

 

Then he added, “But some idiot decided otherwise…Some person somewhere said ‘So-and so’s playing better’. Like it matters.”

 

Despite last-minute pleas for the LA Galaxy star to be picked, however, sources say Pearce is sticking to his decision and that he simply believed Beckham, 37, was not good enough for his team. 

 

Beckham, who McCartney called a ‘crowd-puller’, played a huge role in winning the Olympic games for Britain when he played in Lord Coe’s team during the last games. In contrast, the football star will only be playing a ‘small part’ in the opening ceremony for the Olympic, which will be held in Stratford, East London. 

 

Beckham was part of the 35 players on the list of those who were short-listed for the team, but he did not make it to the final selections and was also not picked as a reserve. So even if any of the 35 players can still be drafted in if a player is declared injured 24 hours before a game, the four reserves will be given priority. 

 

Team GB will be playing its first game against Senegal on Thursday evening.
