New inquiry into Hillsborough disaster, as inquest verdicts quashed

The High Court has overturned the verdicts of the original inquest into the death of 96 Liverpool fans

It was announced on Wednesday that the High Court has quashed the verdicts of the inquest relating to the Hillsborough disaster, where 96 Liverpool football fans lost their lives in 1989. Also, it was announced that there will be a new inquiry into the matter.

The Home Secretary Theresa May announced that there will be a new investigation after judges granted an application from Attorney General Dominic Grieve. It is believed the original inquest proved to be ‘unsustainable’.
It is thought that Jon Stoddart will be in charge of the new inquiry.

A panel that looked at the information surrounding the tragedy found that the victims were supposedly being blamed. This relates to when Liverpool fans were crushed during the FA Cup game 23 years ago. There has been controversy over whether some fans could have survived.

The Home Secretary said: “I am determined to see a swift and thorough response to the findings of the Hillsborough Panel to deliver justice for the 96 football fans who died and the families who have fought so hard on their behalf.”

It is thought that over 160 police statements had been edited with regards to the events of that day.

Liverpool fans lost their lives as stands in the football stadium collapsed on 15th April, 1989.
