Morsi to stand trial for inciting murder

Egypt’s deposed president Mohammed Morsi will stand trial for allegedly inciting his supporters to kill protesters outside the presidential palace

Egypt’s state prosecutors has confirmed that ousted President Mohammed Morsi will go to trial following accusations relating to violence that took place outside the presidential palace in Cairo when he was still in power. At least seven people died in clashes and hundreds more were injured.

Mr Morsi, who was deposed in July, will stand trial together with other fourteen members of the Muslim Brotherhood on the same charges. Brotherhood officials have deny the accusations and said that supporters were defending the palace.

The date for the trial is yet to be announced.

In January 2011, Mr Morsi was accussed of “premeditated murder of some soldiers, officers, and prisoners” in Cairo prison when he together with several Muslim brotherhood leaders were freed. He is also alleged of conspiring with the Palestinian militant group Hamas and plotting attacks on jails in an effort to overthrow President Hosni Mubarak.
