Mercury Prize: Alt-J wins award for An Awesome Wave album

What difference can three years bring! For indie rock band Alt-J, it was a lot. Three years ago, they were among one of the struggling bands trying to make a name for themselves. Today, they are named the next big thing in British pop for winning the prestigious Barclaycard Mercury Prize for their debut album entitled An Awesome Wave. 

 

The chairman of the Mercury judges Simon Firth was “hypnotized” with the quality of the band’s album. He said, as quoted by The Independent: "It's one of those albums that knocks you back when you hear it." 

 

"It's got a certain hypnotic quality and it's melodically interesting. The way it's constructed is layered – it has digital production but it doesn't sound like a digital record. Mercury has always been about something that sounds fresh."

 

Meanwhile, Alt-J thanked everyone and their parents for their support. While accepting their award they said: "We might just thank everyone in team Alt-J who has ever made a difference to us. And our parents... thanks for not making us get jobs!"

 

Alt-J are reportedly planning on doing a series of concerts in the UK and USA before Christmas. They are also planning on working on their second album next year.
