Man dies from floods as weather to worsen over weekend

A man has died after becoming trapped in his car due to rising water levels in Somerset. The tragedy happened on Thursday night, with forecasters expecting the UK’s stormy weather to continue into the weekend.

 

This week Britain has seen torrential rain with many flood warnings having been put in place. One victim suffered as a result of flooding as his car, believed to be a 4x4 vehicle, became stuck under a bridge in the village of Chew Stoke, in the Bath district, near Bristol.

 

Officials from the Fire and Rescue service, as well as police, attended the scene but the man was pronounced dead.

 

The wet weather has brought chaos to many areas across the UK, in particular the South and south-east has been hit hard. Following on from Thursday’s downpour thousands of people have reportedly been left without power. There have also been many people being evacuated from their homes.

 

The Met Office has said that the weather will continue to be wet and windy, with heavy rain and “gale force winds” expected for Saturday and Sunday. There are concerns that the already saturated ground will lead to more widespread flooding.

 

It is expected that wind speeds could reach between 60 and 70mph this weekend according to weather forecasters, which could affect coastal areas of the south-east of England.

 

There were around 90 flood warnings in place from the Environment Agency on Friday morning.
