Man City’s footballer sentenced to 16 months for death crash

Footballer Courtney Meppen-Walter admitted to careless driving that resulted in the death of two people.

Footballer Courtney Meppen-Walter appeared in court on Thursday, February 28th, and was sentenced to 16 months in prison after causing death by careless driving. The 18-year-old was said to be driving 55mph and accelerating in a 30mph zone. 

 

The court was told that Courtney struck a Nissan Micra with a Mercedes C220 Sallon on September 1st. In the front seat were the casualties Mr Singh, 32 and MrsKaur, 37. MrsKaur’s 16 and 17-year-old sons were sitting in the back and sustained injuries. 

 

Mr Singh’s widow said in court, as reported by the BBC: "My life is destroyed after the collision. It feels like the whole world finished and the children's life destroyed.

 

"We were planning our future together."

 

The defendant, who has played 17 times for his country, is expected to serve eight months and maybe released earlier on an electronic tag. His lawyer said that the defendant was “truly sorry” for what had happened. 

 

"The incident was over in a flash," said Mr Lewis in the same report by the BBC. "He stayed at the scene and tried to assist but it was already too late.

 

"The probation report says he's a young man who wished he could have those 10 seconds back, but of course he can't."
