Los Angeles band, Haim, which consists of three sisters from California, is the Sounds of 2013 based on the influential BBC poll. This is the first time since 2005 that an American band tops the critic choice after The Bravery topped the list 8 years ago.
The band, which was formed by Este, Danielle, and Alana Haim, aged between 21-26, features songs that echo Fleetwood Mac in their soft rock prime. The three sisters topped the annual survey of 200 music industry critics, broadcasters, and bloggers.
The Haim sisters started playing when they were much younger when their parents enlisted them into a family covers band. They recently signed to the Universal-owned Polydor label. However, their swift commercial decline proved that being critic’s choice isn’t a guarantee to succeed in this industry.
Radio 1 DJ, Huw Stephens, who announced Haim as the winners on his show, was impressed by the trio. He said that the band had “an unapologetic passion for music that shines in their songs. They're brilliant musicians who have a real talent for tunes that merge their tales of growing up in the 21st Century with classic song writing ability.”
