Following Clarkson's suspension from popular TV show Top Gear, the decision has now been made not to renew his contract, following his bust up with producer, Oisin Tymon.
This decision has been made, according to the Director general, Tony Hall, with, "great regret."
Mr Hall has spoken with Tymon and Clarkson and is satisfied that Tymon was a, "completely innocent party," who behaved with integrity throughout the verbal and physical tirade, which only ended when a witness intervened.
The volume at which Clarkson was shouting could be heard as far as the dining room and in a bedroom.
Mr Hall says that although the BBC is a "broad church," popular and successful personalities cannot be retained regardless of the cost.
The BBC said that the renewal of the show will be looked at for next year.
James May said that the whole thing was a tragedy and that while he was sure Top Gear would continue, he did not know if he, himself, would be presenting the show as he, Clarkson and Hammond come as a package.
