Iran: Peaceful nuclear talks at UN

The "high-level" UN talks saw the “significant shift” in Iran’s attitude to its nuclear program which US and its European allies have welcomed

The US-Iran meeting, which was held in New York and which was attended by diplomats from the P5+1, seemed to please the United States. US Secretary of State John Kerry said that he was struck by the “very different tone” after he met with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif. 

 

However, Mr Kerry said that it was not enough and that there are still questions that Iran must answer. 

 

On October 15, talks about Iran’s nuclear program will be discussed in Geneva. This will involve the US, Russia, Britain, France, and China – the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. Germany is also expected to get involved. 

 

Mr Kerry said that Mr Zarif’s willingness to “put possibilities on the table” pleased him. However, he added that there are still work to be done and there are still questions about Iran’s nuclear programme that need to be answered. 

 

He said: "One meeting and a change in tone, which was welcome, doesn't answer those questions yet.”

 

Meanwhile, Mr Zarif described the talks as “constructive.” He added: "I am satisfied with this first step. Now we have to see whether we can match our positive words with serious deeds so we can move forward."
