Hollywood star Jennifer Hudson and her partner have welcomed their first child.

Hudson, who found fame singing on 'American Idol', gave birth to a healthy 7lb 14oz son.

She named the newborn David Daniel Otunga Jr after his father and her fianc, WWE wrestler David Otunga.

A spokeswoman for the star said: "The baby is beautiful and perfect. His parents are ecstatic."

Hudson, who recently sang at Michael Jackson's memorial service, had previously refused to confirm or deny reports that she was pregnant.

The singer/actress recently had to overcome a tragedy in her family after her mother, brother and nephew were found dead in her home city of Chicago last year.

It later emerged that it was Hudson's sister's estranged husband, William Balfour, who was responsible for their deaths. He was charged with murder.

Hudson first found fame in 2004 on 'American Idol' before appearing the movie 'Dreamgirls'. She won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for the role in 2007.
