On January 14th, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland announced that it found horsemeat as the main ingredient of frozen burgers sold in some supermarkets.
Not only have ingredients in some products being questioned this year in light of this, but perhaps also the procedure entailed in its manufacture. Production is done in batches.
Of course, ABP Silvercrest management denied knowing they were being sold horsemeat and passed the blame to unscrupulous managers of their subsidiary for the deed when it came to their case.
In the light of the horsemeat scandal, supermarkets may now be looking at getting their beef from local supply chains which breed and/or slaughter their own cows.
Sadly the UK herd has suffered a decline as farmers may not be able to reconcile their cost to what the retailers are willing to pay, as economically margins are lower these days due to market conditions.
Scot beef is one of the leading red meat manufacturer in Scotland. It is family owned company which prepares more than 100,000 thousand cattle per year.
Others now want to duplicate this company which acquire live cows from accredited farmers, slaughters them and chills them all in a matter of 45 minutes.
Scot beef only makes burgers using meat from their own abattoir. It is believed they never trade and buy frozen meat from other sources.
Other companies are also available.
