Employees working for music chain HMV were told to smarten up, according to reports.
Employees are required to turn-in for work looking neat and clean. Based on HMV’s “new appearance policy” men must wear blue denim jeans, and women denim skirts.
Although discreet tattoos or piercings are allowed, extreme body art is supposedly expected to be covered up or removed.
Bosses are said to be expecting “high standards of personal grooming” as quoted by The Sun. Aside from piercings, tattoos, long hair, flip-flops or open-toed sandals, are also banned.
Because of this new policy, many top stars, including tattooed Ed Sheeran and Professor Green (along with long-haired Jack White of the White Stripes) would be ruled out of a HMV job because of their appearance.
One worker said, as reported by The Sun: “We’ve got new management. It’s ridiculous and discrimination.”
It is understood that HMV insisted it wanted staff to express their personalities but had to balance this with customer expectations.
