A bizarre loophole made over 100 drugs including ecstacy, ketamine, and magic mushrooms legal in Ireland for one night only. The government promptly attempted to rush through emergency legislation to strike down the loophole.
The loophole stemmed from a stranger-the-fiction legal case in 2012 where a man prosecuted for possessing methylethcathinone denied criminal charges of supplying the substance and argued the regulations were unconstitutional. The substance is one of around 100 under blanket ban in Ireland four years ago.
The court agreed that the law which resulted in a ban on over 100 psychoactive drugs should have been reviewed by the Irish government before being passed, effectively deeming it unconstitutional as it stood.
People were quick to react on Twitter with some making predictions for the night ahead.
One wrote: "Legal loophole means ecstasy is legal in Ireland. Not for long though. Prepare for hipster pop-ups where pills served on chopping boards."
Another one said: "Ecstasy is legal. Now we just need to play Mortal Kombat, listen to Marilyn Manson and we'll have a full house of moral panics from the 90s."
Meanwhile, Health Minister Leo Varadkar, warned individuals who are interested in taking illegal drugs. He said: "They all have very significant health risks that outweigh any perceived recreational benefits.”
