Tommy Walsh looks set to leave "Ground Force" - to head to his own show on ITV1.
Walsh got the job on the BBC series in 1997 after doing building work for a BBC producer.
Tommy Two Days commented: "I don't want the public to tire of the show and my personal opinion is that it should probably be put to sleep for about five years.
"Then it should come back with a new cast and crew and a slightly different format."
He has also told the press that as "Ground Force" has increased the ambition of its projects, he has been worked harder.
"It's not like 'Changing Rooms' where you slap up medium density fibre-board. I know it's a different format for them, but when I leave a job I want to be proud of it.
"'Ground Force' is close to my heart which is why I don't want to see it sunk," he said.
