The famous American figure skater was already considered something of a loose cannon before she became embroiled in one of sport's most controversial incidents.
During the 1994 US National championships, Harding's main rival Nancy Kerrigan was attacked by a man with a leg pipe, suffering knee injuries.
However, this was no random attack. It transpired that Harding's ex-husband and coach, Jeff Gillooly, had hired the perpetrator. Furthermore, Harding had sanctioned the assault.
Kerrigan skated her way to silver, meanwhile, Harding was banned for life from the U.S. Figure Skating Association and Gillooly was sentenced to two years in prison.
