Pygmy tarsier
For over 80 years it has been believed that the pygmy tarsier was extinct, but then one of the tiny nippers came out of hiding in Indonesia. Famed for their bulging eyes, 57 gram weight, sharp claws and long tail, the pygmy was last spotted alive in 1921.
This rare sighting suggests that while they are not extinct as was previously thought, they are still extremely endangered. Texas university professor Sharon Gursky-Doyen has tagged the creature with a radio collar to keep an eye on it.
Gursky-Doyen said: "I have the dubious honour of being the only person in the world to have been bitten by [a pygmy tarsier]" What are some of the world's other creatures that may not live past our lifetimes?
