Since the release of the next generation consoles we've been somewhat swamped with first person shooters. Most are blessed with pleasing graphics and decent sound but when the field is so cluttered which do you pick? And is there still room for the classics?
Released in 1993, 'Doom' was not the original first person shooter (FPS) ever made but it was the game that propelled the FPS straight into the mass media spotlight, starting a global phenomenon.
It added texture mapping to the ceilings and floors, breaking new technological ground, which allowed raised platforms, outdoor environments and more to be used. More importantly, 'Doom' introduced the world to FPS network play. And we never looked back.
