The X Factor once again returned to British screens, bigger and better than ever thanks to support from Britney Spears and Mariah Carey. The eventual winner, Alexandra Burke, performed Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' causing an uproar by fans of Jeff Buckley's definitive cover version.

This resulted in one of the most heated Christmas No 1 races of recent years as Burke's topped the charts and Buckley graced the No 2 spot. Cohen's original also jumped into the top 40.
