In Paul Lister's attempt to recreate the wilderness, he has already returned moose to the Highlands. In addition he is planting 80,000 native trees to recreate the traditional forest environment.
Called an elk in Europe and a moose in the US, a now-extinct species of the animal once populated forests in Ireland. The largest of all is the Alaskan species, which can stand over six feet in height. The animals can weigh between 800 and 1,100lb.
