Hair and cosmetics
Monthly cost per child: £53
Salons, sprays, gels and hairdryers all add up, especially for those image conscious teens. It is estimated that parents dish out £396 on cosmetic products per year and £240 on haircuts, all for their children.
Cost-cutting tips:
Cut costs by cutting yourself! At least one member of the family holds a hidden talent for hairdressing, if not a family friend surely will. This way, the kids get to spend a little more time interacting with the family in the process.
Be aware of the dangers of fancy packaging. Many products will have just the same effect so be sure to shop around, but if expert hair appointments are essential then book in advance and make sure they get only what they need. A book on hairdressing could inspire them to try it themselves!
