Napoleon was a general of the French Revolution and former Emperor of France. In little more than a decade, his armies fought virtually every European power and acquired control of most of the western and central Europe. His reign was finally ended by the British at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. His campaigns are studied at military academies all over the world and he is generally regarded as one of the greatest commanders ever to have lived.
