The event:
The haunting of Pond Square
The location:
Stocken Hall, Rutland – various generations
The legend:
Now an open prison, Stocken Hall has been haunted by three separate ghosts. One is of a woman seen dressed in black with her head lowered, who flits down the corridor. In the early 20th century she was seen by various visitors and is thought to have been the ghost of a girl who was once strangled in the attic.
The phantom of a small white dog was seen for some considerable time in the house. On one occasion two people were walking up the stairs when the dog passed them. They later said that they actually felt the dog as it brushed past their legs leaving those it touched with a burning chill.
The figure of a man wearing a brown smock and a white covering on his face has been seen hanging from the bough of an old oak tree on at least three occasions. It is known that a man was murdered there in the very early 19th century after he had been accused of sheep-stealing.
