McCoy was the last actor to play the Doctor in the original 26-year-series before it ceased production in 1989. Although not formally cancelled, BBC bosses decided not to commission a planned 27th series.
The seventh Doctor met his end when he was transporting the remains of his former enemy the 'Master' to Gallifrey. However, he took control of the Doctor's Tardis landed it in 1999 San Francisco, where the Doctor was shot in the middle of a gang shoot-out.
Fun fact: Before becoming an actor, McCoy considered working in either insurance or joining the priesthood.
