Neil Armstrong has passed away at the age of 82 after facing complications from heart surgery he had undergone earlier this month. His family confirmed his death following complications from cardiovascular procedures.
The former astronaut captained the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. He was the first astronaut to step on lunar surface on 20th July 1969. Together with his fellow NASA astronaut Edwin ' Buzz ' Aldrin, they spent nearly three hours on lunar surface.
After setting foot on the moon, he uttered his famous words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
President Obama also reached out to Neil Armstrong's family with his condolences and referred to him as one of America's greatest heroes. He said that Armstrong and the rest of the crew of Apollo 11 carried with them the aspirations of an entire nation when they set out for the moon in 1969. Neil Armstrong delivered what he called 'a moment of human achievement that will never be forgotten.'
