Fast cash: Britain's highest earning speed cameras revealed

Car insurance firm LV= has revealed Britain’s highest earning speed cameras.

Based on 2013 figures, speed cameras cost motorists £22million in fines in 2013 and the busiest device is at Junction 25 on the M60 in Greater Manchester. It caught about 26 speeding drivers per day and brought in £189,140 in fines.

The survey, which was based on data gathered through Freedom of Information request revealed that Britain currently have 3,353 fixed cameras. In addition, it revealed that 15per cent of drivers who were issued speeding tickets in 2013 were caught by altered speed limits, which was introduced by nine out of 10 councils last year.

It was also revealed that since 2009, 14per cent of drivers have been caught speeding, with 22per cent of them repeat offenders. Meanwhile, police data shows 3per cent increase of speeding offences compared to the previous year.

John O’Roarke, managing director of LV= car insurance, said: “It can be easy for motorists to become complacent, especially when they drive on the same roads day in, day out.

“However, it’s important that drivers always concentrate so they can spot new signs and alterations to the speed limit.”
