‘Downton Abbey’s’ Maggie Smith bags major Emmy Award

Britain was well-represented at the Emmy’s with two major acting awards given to Damian Lewis, from ‘Homeland’, and Dame Maggie Smith, aged 77, off popular show ‘Downton Abbey’.

 

Dame Maggie Smith was announced as the best supporting actress for her role in ‘Downtown Abbey’, where she plays the dowager Coutness of Grantham, although it is understood she didn’t attend the awards night.

 

Lewis, who wasn’t expecting to get the most coveted award, beat Bryan Cranston from ‘Breaking Bad’ and Jon Hamm from ‘Mad Men’ and went home with best actor trophyfor his role in ‘Homeland’. 

 

“I'm one of those pesky Brits, I apologise,” Lewis began to say at his awards speech.

 

“What an extraordinary honour to be in a category with these golden actors setting a gold standard in acting in a golden age of TV.”

 

And the actor also added: “The cast that I work with who are delightful and enjoyable to dine with but especially to the two ladies who've suffered me the most, Claire Danes and Marina Baccarin. You're both beautiful and it's enjoyable working with you, every minute of it.”

 

Lewis didn’t forget to thank his wife, Helen McCrory, who accompanied him on the red carpet calling her the “leading lady of my life”.
