Coronation Street veteran, 90-year-old Betty Driver has been rushed to hospital to be treated for pneumonia.
The actress, who will turn 91 next week, is believed to have been taken to hospital earlier this week.
The show's cast and crew are said to be hugely concerned about Driver, who has played barmaid Betty Williams in the ITV soap since 1969.
A spokesperson for Coronation Street has been quoted as saying:
"Betty has been taken to hospital. We are all wishing her a speedy recovery."
In an interview last year, Driver expressed her fondness for her workplace, saying she would like to work there until the very end:
"I love working on the Street because everyone on it is like my family.
'I don't want to leave at all - I want to die on set."
Betty was awarded an OBE in 2000 for services to the entertainment industry.
