Children with untreated brain injuries more likely to commit crime

Prof Huw Williams, an Associate Professor of Clinical Neuropsychology and Co-Director of the Centre for Clinical Neuropsychology Research, University of Exeter, recently conducted a study aim to discover the correlation of untreated brain injuries to crimes committed by inmates.

 

 

The research showed that 60% of young adult offenders suffered head injuries at least one point in their lives. However, those people who did not receive treatment are three to six times more likely to commit violent crimes compare to those who did. 

 

The researcher is convinced that this study should be used in evidence-based policymaking to make criminal justice fairer for young people who have suffered brain injuries.

 

He also encouraged early and right interventions so people with brain injuries can stay away from violent crimes and lead full lives as valued members of society.

 

He encouraged staying in school and learning to manage their emotions so they’ll be less drawn into any type of criminal activity.
