Singer Cheryl Cole is to separate from her footballer husband following allegations of a string of affairs.

An official statement from representatives of the Girls Aloud singer confirmed the break, saying: "Cheryl Cole is separating from her husband Ashley Cole.

It continued: "Cheryl asks the media to respect her privacy during this difficult time. We have no further comment to make."

The 'Fight for this Love' star flew back into the UK on Tuesday, and announced her marriage is over within hours of landing on English soil.

Singer Cole had been photographed on several occasions not wearing her wedding band while attempting to escape media attention in LA, sparking speculation over an imminent split.

Cheryl wed Chelsea player Ashley Cole in 2006, and despite allegations of his infidelity in January 2008, when hairdresser Aimee Walton claimed he had spent the night with her, the couple battled through.

However, further allegations surfaced earlier this month, linking him to four more women.
