A radical plan by historic Ripon Cathedral, which involves the use of social media, will allow parishioners to follow the services on Twitter wherever they are. Using their phones and laptops, they can take part in prayers live, responding during the service with the hashtag #compline.
Sian Lawton, from nearby Middleham, will oversee Ripon Cathedral’s online ministries.
She said “Online prayer is an area we’re looking to develop, so keep an eye out by -following @riponcathedral on Twitter to see what happens.”
The North Yorkshire cathedral has bee known for using cutting edge technology to reach out to more people.
Nick Morgan, who set up the cathedral’s online services, said: “Our online ministry has grown enormously.
“By getting the Cathedral out there on the internet, conversations with our local community, people throughout the region and around the world have been made possible.
“It has meant members of our own congregations can keep in touch throughout the week and keep conversations going between Sunday services.”
He added: “We have been able to promote the work of churches around the area, collaborate with tourist ¬attractions and we are even used as an example to businesses for our use of social media.”
