Britney Spears is donating over US$1million to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The beautiful singer, who grew up in Louisiana, is "shocked and saddened" by the Gulf Coast disaster and wants to help.

The 23-year-old's mother, Lynne, and many of her family still live near the affected areas.

Britney, who gave birth to son Sean Preston last week, posted a message on her website saying she was "praying" for those caught up in the disaster.

The blonde star will donate two grants from her foundation to the relief efforts.

The first will go to Habitat for Humanity and will help rebuild the lives of families affected by the disaster.

The second will provide the East Baton Rouge School System, which has taken in nearly 7,000 displaced New Orleans students, with supplies, transportation and other materials.
