Britain's 10 worst routes revealed

The government has been urged to tackle Britain's crumbling road networks after a new report by the RAC has exposed the worst routes in the UK.

The RAC report, voted for by RAC members, lists the 10 worst A roads across the nation and calls upon the UK Government to adopt more low cost measures, such as repairing potholes, as opposed to paying out for expensive new road projects.

It also found that 85% of road users are "frustrated" with the condition of their roads while only 2% felt satisfied that they were being adequately maintained.

The 10 worst highways from hell are as follows

1. The M25 stretch from Heathrow to the M1

2. The interchange between the M6 and the M46 East of Birmingham.

3. M6 between Telford and Birmingham.

4. Dartford Crossing area of the M25 from Essex to Kent.

5. Clogged M4 approach into West London.

6. M1 between Nottingham and Sheffield.

7. A14 around Cambridge.

8. M62 around Leeds and Huddersfield.

9. M1 through the Home Counties.

10. The North Circular route between the M1 and the M11.

RAC strategist Adrian Tink said: "Those 10 are a national disgrace. We estimate that drivers waste 140 million hours a year stuck in jams.

"Our members don't expect fancy and expensive schemes. They want simple, cost-effective improvements on roads they use every day. They understand the need to pay taxes, but don't think they're getting value for money."

More than 45 billion a year is paid out in road and fuel taxes, but only 8 billion of this goes into improving the network.
