Bradley Wiggins thinks Cavendish should leave Team Sky

Famed cyclist Bradley Wiggins accepts for British team mate Mark Cavendish to improve his career, he needs to move on from UCI ProTeam Team Sky.

 

Cavendish, 27, has more than two years left on his contract and it is believed that Sky focus on average wins rather than individual stage victories.

 

“From a selfish point of view, I'd love him to stay,” popular cyclist Wiggins,32, told the BBC, "I enjoy his company but I understand why he has to leave."

 

But his three stage wins in 2012 are the lowest since 2007, and according to the BBC this has led to the thinking he would leave the team.

 

“I love seeing him win as much as anyone else and to see Mark back out on the Tour winning six, seven or eight different stages and challenging for the green, he probably has to go,” said Wiggins, as quoted by The Daily Mail.

 

“At Sky we have set a precedent now. If we are going to dominate cycling and win three grand tours in a year, we have to start building to that GC [general classification] thing,” he added.

 

“Unfortunately for Mark, as we saw in the Tour, the two don't really go well together.”

 

Wiggins spoke after the charity event 'Ride with Brad', which launched The Bradley Wiggins Foundation that aims to promote sport, where hundreds of cyclists took to Lancashire roads with the star on Sunday.

 

Cavendish, a sprinter from the Isle of Man who has been road racing since 2006, claimed the 2011 green jersey for highest amount of sprints and is the 2011 Road Race World Champion.

 

He previously rode for HTC-Highroad until 2011, and has 23 stage wins for Tour de France ranking him 4th in the overall list.

 

Cavendish also won BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award in 2011.
