Three people have been killed in Boston after two explosions went off at the city’s marathon event on Monday, 15thApril. As a result of the blasts, more than 100 people have been injured.
The bombs exploded close to the finishing line, where many people were gathered to watch runners complete the race. It is thought that many friends and family members of individuals taking part in the Boston Marathon were among the spectators there.
Based on reports, one victim who tragically lost his life was an eight-year-old boy. It is understood the boy was waiting at the finishing line to greet his family member, believed to be his father, who was racing.
President Barack Obama has said that the people behind the blasts would experience “the full weight of justice”.
He said: “The American people will say a prayer for Boston tonight. Michelle and I send our deepest thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims in the wake of this senseless loss.”
Adding: “We will find out who did this and we will hold them accountable," he said. "Make no mistake, we will find out who did this and why they did this, and the groups or individuals responsible will feel the full weight of justice.”
Security has been increased in Boston, the capital city of Massachusetts, among other places as a result of the blasts.
This news comes ahead of the UK’s London Marathon, which is planned for Sunday, 21st April. Reports have stated that the event is expected to take place, and that security will now be looked into.
