Singer Billy Joel and his wife Katie Lee are splitting up, they have confirmed.

The couple, who married at Joel's New York mansion, are ending their relationship after five years together.

The pair said they took the decision after "much thought and consideration" and "remain caring friends with admiration and respect for each other". They have no children together.

The musician, known for his hits ' All My Life' and 'Uptown Girl' has been married three times.

His first marriage lasted for nine years to his manager Elizabeth Small. They tied the not in 1973.

He then married model Christie Brinkley in 1985, who he has a daughter with named Alexa Ray. However the couple divorced nine years later.
