Athletes are well aware that drinking beetroot juice helps improve their sporting performance. However, not all of them know the right dosage and the perfect time to drink it for optimal results.
The University of Exeter’s Sport and Health Services, which conducted a study and has published a new paper in the Journal of Applied Physiology, offered the right answers.
The research team, led by Professor Andy Jones, found that for severe intensity exercise, drinking two concentrated beetroot shots is highly recommended. They also said that the shots are best consumed 2.5 hours before the onset of exercise.
Meanwhile, for athletes who are about to carry out “moderate” exercise, 4 shots of beetroot juice is highly recommended and must be taken 2.5 hours before the start of the exercise.
The study also found that beetroot juice’s effect on performance is at its peak 2-3 hours after digestion and this gradually declines after about 12 hours.
