So, you’ve found an app, service or website that look enticing enough that you would want to sign up right away. But how can you tell if its legit and that it’s not going to subject you to dark pattern tactics or share your sensitive data with advertisers? Here’s how:
· Find out how it makes money. Paid for apps, although not free, gives you peace of mind because it is less likely that they will sell your information to the highest bidder to make money. If you’re considering a free product, find out its source of revenue. Does it charge extras for businesses or make money through premium plans and advertising?
· Read reviews – See what other people are saying about the service and you are more likely to identify potential problems that you may encounter should you decide to sign up.
· Check the terms and conditions – Very few people actually read, much less understand the terms and conditions of many services out there. However, checking them out is still highly encouraged. If you don’t have enough time to read numerous pages, look for sections that are most relevant to you, such as data use and privacy. If in doubt, seek clarification from the developer.
· Find more information about the developer – Using a product from an established developer sure gives you peace of mind. But what if the product is a brainchild of a new, indie developer? To be on the safe side, check the developer and verify its legitimacy.
