Antarctic summer ice is melting faster, says study

Researchers have found that the ice has melted more in the last half a century

Researchers from the British Antarctic Survey and the Australian National University have been looking at the situation concerning ice melting.

 

Based on media reports, their study states that compared to 600 years ago, the Antartic summer ice is thawing out faster. This is in regards to the last half a century.

 

It is understood that tests have been carried out at James Ross Island.

 

The research suggests the amount that the ice has melted has reached the greatest level in 1,000 years.

 

“It's definitely evidence that the climate and the environment is changing in this part of Antarctica,” said the lead researcher, Nerilie Abram, as quoted by the Mail Online in one report.

 

He added that the “new ice core record shows that even small changes in temperature can result in large increases in the amount of melting in places where summer temperatures are near to 0°C, such as along the Antarctic Peninsula, and this has import”.

 

Antarctica is the most southern continent, and it is here where the South Pole lies. The Southern Ocean surrounds the area.
