When you get those utility bills and they reflect the newest increases, you may ask yourself what you can do to try and minimize the cost of your bills. The good news is there are a lot of things you can do to try and manage costs a little bit more.
Some of these steps are applicable to everyone, and some are geared towards a more specific populace, but you can consider all of these ways to see which, if any, work for you.
1. Make sure your residence, whether a house or a flat, is energy efficient. Check for energy efficient small appliances, double-glazed windows, adequate insulation, and gaps around windows and doors.
Inexpensive ways to make your heating (or cooling) more efficient involve using kits with cello tape and plastic over windows with high-density foam to insulate gaps around doors and windows. Basically, anywhere there is a draught you will probably need to put some foam padding or draught-proof the area in the best way possible.
2. Take advantage of any government or other sponsored programs, which allow you to get solar panels for your home in the form of a loan, which is then repaid, to the utility company at a fairly low interest rate. You will save quite a bit on your monthly utility bills without having to worry about the costly initial payout.
3. Find out if your residence qualifies for the Feed-In Tariff scheme. The scheme allows you to reduce your energy bill and in some cases receive payments from any excess energy that your solar energy system created for the energy company. Find out if there are any other incentives or specials offered by the energy company if you do opt for solar energy.
With just a few small changes, you can ease your financial burden and the environment. Decide which measures work best for you and start saving on your utility bills.
