Every male employee over the age of 21 at the Guinness Company used to be given a beer allowance of two pints of Guinness per day at the 'tap', a special beer distribution point within the brewery, where men drank together from metal tankards.
It wasn't the only perk of the job either. Arthur Guinness (above) ensured that his staff were paid well - salaries and wages at St James's Gate were always 10-20% above the Dublin average.
