Chris Tarrant handed over a 1million cheque to the 42-year-old father of two who last night won the jackpot on ITV's Who Wants to be a Millionaire?
Computer programmer Pat Gibson from Wigan became the youngest of only four people to have won the top prize on the show.
Mr Gibson had two lifelines remaining when he faced the final question: which of these is not one of the American Triple Crown horse races?
Elated after his win, Mr Gibson said: "When I came back with 250,000 and two lifelines, I decided that whatever happened I wasn't going to take any risks.
"When I saw the million pound question I knew the answer was Arlington Million but the stakes are so high at that stage of the game that it would have been foolish not to have used the lifelines."
Family friend Mark Kerr confirmed Mr Gibson's answer on the phone and more than returned the favour given him by Mr Gibson who helped Mr Kerr to a 250,000 prize as his phone friend on an earlier show.
Host Chris Tarrant said: "Pat was an incredible contestant. We've never had someone get to the million pound question with two lifelines remaining before - he really knows his stuff.
"I'm delighted for him and his family."
Previous jackpot winners are as follows: Judith Keppel in November 2001, David Edwards in April 2001 and Robert Bridges in September 2001.
