Worst tidal surge in 60 years evacuates thousands of Britons from coastal homes

Thousands of people were evacuated from their homes after a massive tidal surge struck coastal towns in the east of Britain.

The North Sea surge, which is described as the worst in 60 years, has affected thousands of coastal homes on the east of Britain. It reached north Norfolk and moved to the south on Thursday.

As a result, thousands of Britons were evacuated while the fierce storm has killed two people and now, Scotland faces snow alerts.

Over the weekend, it has been announced that Environment Secretary Own Paterson is chairing a meeting of the government’s Cobra committee to discuss the floods.

Meanwhile, the Environment Agency has dozens of severe flood warnings in place. It confirmed that some flood defences have collapsed and that repairs are now being done.

Rescue teams have been dispatched in many areas. Soldiers were tasked to help flood prevention effort in Essex and Norfolk.

In all, there were about 9,000 people who were evacuated from Great Yarmouth area where at least 26 properties were destroyed by flood. Another 400 homes were affected by flood in Humber region as confirmed by the Environment Agency.
